Interfilk Guest : Bob and Sue Esty |
|
Sue and Bob met when Bob was directing a madrigal group that Sue wanted to
join. They have been performing together at the Maryland Renaissance Faire
for over a quarter century. They are also longtime performers at Darkover,
a science fiction convention in Maryland, and at local SCA events. Bob
performs as part of Clam Chowder, a folk group that plays regularly at
Darkover and irregularly elsewhere. Sue sings and plays harp, bowed
psaltery, and bodhran, and Bob sings and plays harp, bones, penny whistle,
trombone, and a few other things he’s not entirely willing to own up to.
They actively search for interesting English and Scottish ballads and, if
they don’t like the way a ballad ends or it has to be rewritten to compact
twenty verses into six, well, that’s what the folk process is all about.
Each also writes his or her own original music, lyrics or both, as the muse
ordains. Both Bob and Sue grew up in the folk era and look forward to
performing in a venue where they can introduce a new audience to some of
their favorite ‘oldies’ from the 16th century to the 21st.
